Product financials
Per-product profit and margin on the Financials page — gross vs net profit from your last 90 days of DTC orders, Amazon contribution margin after FBA and referral fees, and where every cost comes from.
On this page
Product financials is available on Advanced. On other plans the page shows a blurred sample with an upgrade option.
The Financials page shows what each product actually earns you after its costs. Left nav → Tools → Product financials (organization admins only).
DTC and Amazon
If Amazon is connected, a toggle at the top switches between Amazon and DTC (your Shopify store). Without Amazon, the page shows DTC only.
- DTC — profit and margin from your real orders over the last 90 days.
- Amazon — per-unit maths on each product’s Amazon list price, after Amazon’s fees.
DTC columns
- SKU, Product, Brand
- Landed Cost — your cost per unit. Your own cost wins; otherwise Shopify’s “Cost per item”; otherwise your store-wide figure.
- MSRP (or RRP) — the product’s price in Shopify. Stores whose prices include tax also get an ex. VAT (or ex. GST) column once you’ve set a tax rate.
- Fulfillment Fee and Carrier Cost — per product if you’ve set one, otherwise your store-wide per-order figure.
- Payment Fees — the price times your payment-fee percentage.
- Total Cost — landed cost plus fulfillment, carrier and payment fees.
- Units Sold (90d) — units sold and kept; refunded units are taken off.
- Gross profit (90d) — revenue before tax, net of discounts and refunds, less the cost of the units kept. Each unit is costed at the cost that applied when it sold. Once you enter per-order costs on Settings → Product Costs, fulfillment, shipping and payment fees are subtracted too and the column becomes Profit (90d).
- Gross margin (90d) (or Margin (90d)) — profit ÷ revenue before tax.
Profit and margin are before ad spend.
Amazon columns
- SKU, Product, Brand, Landed Cost
- MSRP — the product’s Amazon list price, and the price excluding tax.
- COGS % — cost ÷ price excluding tax.
- Gross Profit and Gross Margin — price excluding tax, less cost.
- FBA Fee, Referral % and Referral Fee — Amazon’s fees.
- Total Cost — cost plus FBA and referral fees.
- Contribution Profit and Contribution Margin — price excluding tax, less total cost.
Where each cost comes from
A small icon next to a cost shows its source, explained in the legend above the table:
- You set this — you entered it in Ordinary. Shopify’s value doesn’t override it.
- From Shopify — Shopify’s “Cost per item”, refreshed daily.
- Your store-wide figure — a default you set for the whole store.
- Variants differ — the product’s variants have different costs; one is shown.
If your cost differs from Shopify’s, Shopify’s figure appears beside it so you can compare.
When a cost is missing
A missing cost is never treated as zero. Instead:
- — means there’s no cost data, or no sales in the last 90 days.
- A profit or margin of — with the note “Costs missing” means too little of the product’s revenue has a cost to give a reliable figure.
- A value starting with ≤ means some units sold without a cost, so the true profit is at most this.
Hover a profit or margin cell for how it was worked out.
Editing costs
Click a Landed Cost, Fulfillment Fee or Carrier Cost cell (a pencil appears on hover). For a single-variant product, type the new value and press Enter, or Esc to cancel. Leave it empty to go back to Shopify’s cost or your store-wide figure. For a product with several variants, a window opens so you can set the cost per variant.
Store-wide figures, tax rate and bulk cost import live on Settings → Product Costs — the Cost settings button on this page goes there. See Product costs.
